 cool, but very hard to transform, easy to break November 30, 2009

we got one for my little brother, 9, for his birthday, and he really liked it, but could never transform it. i always had to do it for him, and i'll tell you, even when i knew exactly how to do it it could take twenty minutes just trying to get everything to snap into the right place. the end product is very cool and realistic though. however, i was off to college 3 weeks, went back home, and it was broken! children will break things like this when they don't actually know how to transform it. you can't guess and get it right, u'll end up breaking something, also, you'll think you broke something when u didn't because of all the parts. all in all cool toy, my brother really liked it, be prepared to transform it for your kid everytime into the vehicle. back into the robot form is actually really easy

This is 2007 movie Optimus Prime in his leader class form and he really is a solid toy. His vehicle mode is a nice Peter built truck and his robot mode is a good representation of the autobot leader I grew up with watching the 80's cartoon before school. The reason I do this review now, even though I have owned him for more than a year, is because I wanted to compare him with some other live action movie style Primes.
First we observe him with his voyager class counterpart. In vehicle mode '07 leader Prime wins with rubber tires a working horn and a bigger version of the truck. When it comes to trucks bigger is indeed better!
As for the robot mode I must grudgingly yield to the double gunslinger that is voyager class Prime. He has less vehicle extra parts on him and those weapons just plain outclass leader Optimus' ion blaster.
Bottom line: Voyager slightly edges out leader class with a better robot mode and a much better price!
Last but not least we look at 2007 leader next to his 2009 successor, Revenge of The Fallen Leader Optimus Prime. In truck mode they are running a tight race. 2007 Prime still has those nice rubber wheels but his weapon storage is WAY too much of a give away for a robot in disguise. '09 Prime lacks the rubber tires (sigh) but he makes up for it with a much more clean and crisp truck mode keeping his energy swords tucked safely in his truck mode engine. ROTF prime takes 2007 version in vehicle mode.
In robot mode there is no contest. While the first leader class has a nice robot form that is very solid and effective, the new leader Prime just knocks this ball right through the neighbor's window and runs away before he even has a chance to call Alpha Trion
Bottom line: ROTF Prime wins this comparison any day of the week.
So what have we learned?
2007 leader class is a great toy but if you do not have one by now don't bother getting one. I guarantee that you will do much better with the voyager class or ROTF version. Thank you for reading this review and have a great day! Time for me to transform and roll out!

Very difficult to change/transform. Adults will need patience and luck. I don't recommend it for kids under 5, or adults over 40.

But for $39.97 you could get it anywhere in walmart, why pay double ridiculous price here?

After reading the reviews, I got the impression that this toy looks good in robot and truck mode. I was not disappointed. Once I got it out of the package, which was not easy, my 11 year old son took it. He pulled things in different directions for about 20 seconds, decided that things were complicated, and he wanted to look for an on-line tutorial. He has an older transformer that is relatively complex, and I was never able to figure that one out. We expected this to be tougher, so I wasn't surprised that he did not dive into it.
I glanced at the instructions and could not make sense of them. Perhaps it was because I did not start out as in the beginning picture. But I tend to be good with "picture only" instructions, and this one will not act as a simple "how to" guide. After playing around with it for a while, I found that it was not as tough as I expected. My son said that since it took me about 15 to 20 minutes, it could not be so bad. He decided to do it on his own and had a lot of fun with it.
After you do it a couple of times, it might not take more than 5-6 minutes to become a truck, but it is still intricate enough that it will not be boring for a child. It's not something that will get cast aside after a few days. Turning it into a robot is relatively trivial. If you merely pull everything outwards, it becomes self evident fairly quickly. But there will still be a few stumbling blocks, especially the first few times, and there will be a few things that won't be quite right without a little work.
I would not recommend it for a five year old, or for anybody who tends not to be good at puzzles or similar toys. But if experience tells you that you are ready for it, or if you don't mind a good challenge, you end up with an impressive looking robot and truck. If you make sure that the child's expectations are set correctly, it can be good for a variety of skill levels. Let them know that it will take time to figure out, but it will be fun trying to do it.
One con is that it does not have much ground clearance as a truck. Pushing it along a sidewalk could scrape up the joint in the middle of the bottom. For indoor play, it should withstand more roughness.
Transforming it is like playing with a Rubik's cube. It's tough at first, you can eventually get it down to a few minutes, and you will probably get bored with it once it becomes easy. The difference is that your child won't need to keep transforming it, since the goal is creating a toy, not solving a puzzle. Both the truck and robot are fun for a child to play with.
There are different versions of this, so do a search on amazon before you buy it. Mine came with an extra two small figures, and cost less than buying Optimus Prime alone. But prices can fluctuate daily.
